Consumers must be "shoe savvy" when choosing footwear for Christmas shopping, according to those in podiatry jobs.

Research by Debenhams shows that more than 90 per cent of the women's shoe market in Britain is comprised of fashion statement shoes.

Due to improved technology, these shoes can now survive everyday wear - meaning high heels are now often classed as practical for most occasions.

Instead of buying traditional sensible shoes, when women want to be comfortable they opt for training shoes, which are now seen as socially acceptable.

However, podiatric surgeon Emma Supple warned of the dangers of wearing high heels while Christmas shopping.

"Those shopping malls are relentless on your feet. That hard [...] surface which the world has become at a great expense is relentless and the pressure is relentless on your feet," she said.

"It's very important to remember that you have one pair of feet for your life so you need to look after them. If you can get yourself to a specialist/podiatrist, go in and have a one-off consultation to find out what it is you inherited that really is invaluable," she added.
