Register as an Dietitian
Friday 12th November 2010
Dietician jobs are becoming increasingly important with researching showing that obese teenagers are at a high risk of severe obesity in later life.
Seven in ten (70.5 per cent) obese teenagers became severely obese adults, according to researchers at the University of North Carolina, whereas only five per cent of those who were of normal weight at the beginning of the study became severely obese adults.
The study followed 8,834 adolescents aged between 12 and 21 years-old over a period of 13 years and found that 51.3 per cent of females and 37.1 per cent of males who were obese teenagers were severely obese adults.
It was also found that people with severe obesity were more likely to come from a racial minority.
Commenting on the findings, British Heart Foundation senior cardiac nurse Ellen Mason said: "Obesity should remain a great cause of concern in the UK because of the associated risk of type two diabetes, some cancers and heart and circulatory disease."
Meanwhile, researchers from Duke University in North Carolina surveyed data from the study and found that having three or more Attention Deficit Hyerpactivity Disorder symptoms increase the likelihood of obesity in adulthood.
