Refer an Audiologist
Friday 12th November 2010
Researchers in audiology jobs have discovered that Tinnitus is caused by the firing of neurons in the brain.
Sufferers of the hearing disorder complain about a ringing or hissing in their ears but those in audiology jobs have thus far been undecided as to what caused the problem.
The phantom ringing is caused by neurons communicating when hearing loss occurs, research from McMaster University in Ontario has shown.
Changes in the brain when hearing deteriorates cause the neurons to generate the sound.
Reflecting this, the disorder is most common in people who are over 60 years-old, with eight to 20 per cent of these estimated to suffer from Tinnitus.
Researcher Larry Roberts said that there needs to be more of a focus research into hearing, particularly with the number of young people suffering from hearing loss on the rise.
"The implications underscore the need for more public policy on prevention. Much like the movement that swayed public opinion on the dangers of cigarette smoking and the need for cessation, we need new initiatives on hearing loss," he said.
This comes after news that those in hospital doctor jobs can spend more time with patients in need of their help due to more people using NHS resources online to diagnose minor issues.
