Those in UK cardiac jobs are not prescribing enough statins to those at risk of a heart attack or stroke, according to new research.
Thousands of deaths could be prevented every year if high doses of statins were prescribed, according to scientists from the University of Oxford and the University of Sydney.
The study, published in The Lancet, showed that in five trials of intensive therapy there was an overall further reduction by 15 per cent in major vascular events, 13 per cent in coronary death or non-fatal heart attack as compared to standard therapy.
In addition, a 19 per cent further reduction was seen in revascularisation and 16 per cent in ischemic stroke.
Statins are a type of medicine used to lower blood cholesterol levels and work by blocking the function of an enzyme in the liver which is essential for the creation of cholesterol.
