Stroke drug linked to better long-term recovery

Professionals in UK cardiac jobs will undoubtedly be pleased with the results of recent research, which suggests that stroke patients who show improvement one hour after treatment are likely to have a better recovery.
Stroke patients who show early improvement within the first hour of receiving the clot-busting drug rt-PA were found to be more likely to do well three months further along in their recovery period, according to new research published in the Archives of Neurology journal.
In the study, nearly a fifth of patients showed improvements within an hour of treatment. After three months, more than two-thirds of these patients had a favourable outcome.
Commenting on the findings, lead researcher from the Loyola University Chicago STritch School of Medicine, Dr Jose Biller, said: "The benefits of treatment outweigh the risks in patients treated with intravenous rt-PA within 4.5 hours of symptom onset."
He suggested that a failure to see any improvement within the first hour of receiving the drug could prompt health care professionals to consider other interventions, to give patients the best chance of long-term recovery.
