Creating more UK medical jobs may be required to improve adult social care services in the UK.
The UK's adult social care services sector needs to be expanded to meet anticipated future demand, according to the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
However, the organisation did underline the good work that has been done to improve services over the last year.
The CQC noted that 83 per cent of care homes, home care services and nursing agencies were rated good or excellent this year, compared to 69 per cent in 2008.
Commenting on the report findings, CQC chief executive Cynthia Bower explained that the improvement in quality was encouraging, but drew attention to "pockets of poor practice" and the need to address future demands.
She added: "Policy makers should also ensure future social care strategies encourage capacity building for commissioners to develop markets, which will require innovation in the light of economic and budgetary constraints."
Earlier this week, researchers at the University of Missouri underlined the importance of diagnosing depression in the elderly quickly to help patients maintain their health at nursing homes.
