Register as an Dietitian
Tuesday 9th November 2010
A new study may encourage those in dietician jobs to boost the level of vitamin D in children's diets.
Children deficient in vitamin D were found to accumulate fat around the waist more rapidly than peers who got the recommended daily amount in a study by researchers at the University of Michigan.
Accumulating abdominal fat may also contribute to people developing an apple body shape, which has been associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Commenting on the findings, lead researcher Eduardo Villamor underlined significance of the study.
He explained: "Our findings suggest that low vitamin D status may put children at risk of obesity.
"This is significant because vitamin D insufficiency is highly prevalent across the globe and childhood obesity rates are dramatically increasing worldwide."
Meanwhile, research presented at the American Dietetic Association Annual Food and Nutrition conference suggested that drinking 100 per cent fruit juice can boost the intake of essential nutrients into the body.
