Asthma linked to lung cancer, study finds

A study has found a link between asthma and lung cancer, which may interest those in UK medical jobs.
The research conducted at the University of Missouri has found a correlation between asthma and cancer of the lung, reports HealthDay.
Scientists responsible for the study speculate that chronic repeated inflammation caused by asthma could cause the cancer, although it is unclear how this might occur.
However, Dr Marilyn Glassberg, an associate professor of clinical medicine, pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, has urged those with asthma not to worry, reports HealthDay.
Although the link is of interest, says Glassberg, correlation studies only mark a trend and do not offer cause and effect explanations.
"This is not going to change how we take care of people, or (cause us) to screen asthmatics for lung cancer," HealthDay reports her as saying.
Meanwhile research at the at the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology at the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research of the Jewish General Hospital, found that the inhaled corticosteroids used to treat asthma could be linked to diabetes.
