Individuals exercising more this winter could cut the number of common colds that doctors and those in pharmacy jobs have to treat.
A team of scientists from Appalachian State University found that fitter people are less likely contract colds than their unfit peers and if they do become ill, their condition is milder.
Researchers discovered that those who said they exercised at least five days per week had 43 per cent fewer sick days due to upper respiratory tract infection than those who did not, according to the study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
Dr. David Nieman, the professor who led the study, said: "Exercise is probably the most powerful thing you can do to reduce your sick days this winter."
"This is the best evidence we have thus far that regular aerobic exercise, five or more days per week for more than 20 minutes a day, rises above all other lifestyle factors in lowering sick days during the winter and fall cold seasons."
Meanwhile, the BBC has reported that Medical Research Council findings showed that illnesses such as the common cold could potentially be treated internally by way of antiviral medicines.
