Register as an Dietitian
Tuesday 2nd November 2010
By advising their patients to eat almonds, those in a dietician job could be playing a significant role in helping people fight off viral infections, such as the common cold and flu.
Scientists at the Institute of Food Research (IFR) in Norwich and the Policlinico Universitario in Italy have said that naturally-occurring chemicals in the nut's skin can boost the immune system's response to these viruses.
Dr Giuseppina Mandalari, from the IFR, explained: "Almond skins are able to stimulate the immune response and thus contribute to an antiviral immune defence."
She added that, while research was still needed to determine how many almonds were required for a positive effect to be noted, it was likely that regular consumption would bring benefits.
Last month, Penn State researchers told those in a dietician job that walnuts and their derivative oil could help prepare patients' bodies to better cope with conditions such as stress and anxiety.
