Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Tuesday 2nd November 2010
Scientists have suggested that heart disease in the UK could be reduced by almost one-fifth if manufacturers were forced to trim the amount of salt they put in food, which could be a boost to cardiac physiologists.
According to a study by researchers at the University of Queensland, mandatory legislation would be almost 20 times more effective in lowering the impact of Britain's biggest killer.
Dr Linda Cobiac, who led the investigation, said: "Food manufacturers have a responsibility to make money for their shareholders, but they also have a responsibility to society."
She added that, if corporate responsibility fails to control salt content, there should be "ethical justification" for the government to step in and enforce legislative guidelines.
Meanwhile, a recent report, co-authored by former UK chief drugs adviser Professor David Nutt, has ranked alcohol as a greater threat to overall public health than hard drugs, such as heroin or crack cocaine.
