Labour has promised to tackle unemployment in Scotland if its wins power at Holyrood next May, proposing a £40 million drive to boost public-sector opportunities, which may include UK medical jobs.
According to the Financial Times, the party's finance spokesperson Andy Kerr said that a new Scottish Futures Trust would aim to provide a minimum of 10,000 jobs and training places.
Iain Gray, the Scottish Labour leader, told a conference at the weekend that he planned a radical restructuring of public services.
"Scotland has 22 health boards – that is too many. They all have their own IT systems. That is daft," he was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
Mr Gray went on to say that a National Care Service would be introduced, working alongside the NHS to improve provisions for the elderly and potentially delivering a significant boost to those seeking UK medical jobs.
Meanwhile, patients in England are set to benefit from a £600 million cancer fund, which, effective from April 2011, is intended to widen access to life-extending treatments.
