Hospital doctors to offer new osteoporosis treatment

A new treatment for women particularly vulnerable to osteoporotic fractures will soon be available from those in NHS hospital doctor jobs.
Denosumab, also known by its trade name Prolia, is given as an injection and mimics the body's system of controlling the breakdown of bone matter.
The treatment targets harmful cells which cause bones to decay, increasing overall bone density and reducing the risk of fractures occurring.
Dr Carole Longson, Health Technology Evaluation Centre director for the health service watchdog Nice, said that denosumab would be particularly useful for preventing osteoporotic fractures in post-menopausal women.
"Denosumab joins the range of treatments that Nice has already advised should be available on the NHS, to help stop a fracture from occurring in the first place, or to help women who have previously had a fracture," she added.
Women using the drug will be treated by those in hospital doctor jobs, with an injection into their thigh, abdomen or arm once every six months.
