New research has found that applying a cold compress to bruised or sprained muscles to reduce swelling could actually slow down the patient's healing process, which may interest those seeking a physiotherapy job.
The US study, published in the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology journal, suggests that muscle inflammation following acute injury is essential to quick and healthy repair.
Professor Lan Zhou, who led the research at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, has explained that inflamed cells produce high levels of the hormone IGF-1, which significantly increases the rate of muscular regeneration.
"We hope that our findings stimulate further research to dissect different roles played by tissue inflammation in clinical settings," he added.
The investigation involved two groups of mice, with one being genetically altered so that they were unable to form an inflammatory response to muscle damage.
When muscular tissue was damaged, the mice capable of inflammation were found to produce a high level of the beneficial hormone.
