The blood vessels of Britain's overweight teenagers look more like those of the middle-aged, according to Canadian researchers, which could highlight the importance of UK cardiac jobs in beating the obesity epidemic.
A study conducted by team of scientists from British Columbia Children's Hospital found signs of "stiffening" in the aorta – the body's largest artery – among 63 children examined, whose average age was just 13 years, the BBC reported.
Dr Kevin Harris, one of the researchers involved, told the broadcaster that the findings meant heart disease, which can often be life threatening, appeared to be developing "silently" during childhood.
"The systolic blood pressure was only marginally higher in these obese children - but aortic stiffness is associated with cardiovascular events and early death," he explained.
Earlier this month, the British Heart Foundation released an application for the iPhone mobile handset, which it hopes will encourage young people to eat more healthily.
When a recipe is chosen on the app, a red, amber or green light will appear, indicating whether the meal is rich in calories, fat or salt.
