Refer an Hospital Doctor
Friday 22nd October 2010
Those studying medicine with a view to working in hospital doctor jobs require more non-clinical training, in areas such as leadership and professionalism, according to a new report.
Entitled 21st Century Doctor: Understanding the Doctors of Tomorrow, the findings, supported by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), calls for greater teaching of the skills doctors will need to become future leaders in the NHS.
Research conducted among almost 500 medical students revealed that many were uncertain about their potential futures in management and the skills they would be expected to have.
Sir Richard Thompson, president of the RCP, said: "It is clear that students want to learn more about the non-medical aspects of a career in medicine."
He added that more than 80 per cent of students consulted believed hospital doctor jobs should include leadership and management training.
Earlier this week, consultant obstetrician Prabbha Sinha told the BBC that additional training in difficult births could help hospital doctors perform fewer caesarean section operations.
