Babies born during the autumn months could be at a greater risk of developing food allergies, new research has found, which may interest those seeking a dietician job.
Published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, the Finnish study revealed that those born in October and November were almost twice as likely to show some form of intolerance by the age of four.
Researchers noted that 9.5 per cent of autumn babies had allergic response to at least one food, compared to just five percent of youngsters born in the warmer months of June and July.
Finland's Dr Kaisa Pyrhonen, from the University of Oulu's Institute of Health Sciences, suggested that the variations could be a result of foetus' exposure to pollen at critical times during pregnancy.
"Children having their early gestational period in the pollen season for broad-leafed trees are more prone to sensitisation to food allergens than other children," the expert explained.
Meanwhile, health professionals working in or seeking a dietician job have been divided in opinion recently, by some researchers' claims that dark chocolate could help diabetics control dangerously high cholesterol levels.
