Register as an Dietitian
Thursday 21st October 2010
New research has revealed that fathers with diabetes who indulge in a poor diet are more likely to pass the condition on to their daughters.
Researchers from the University of New South Wales, Australia, told those looking for a dietician job that overweight parents who consume foods high in fat may by fuelling a diabetes epidemic.
This is because they are passing on glucose intolerance and insulin resistance to their offspring.
A study involving rats found that fathers who ate considerable amounts of unhealthy food went on to produce daughters with abnormal cells that produce insulin.
Professor Margaret Morris, from the university, said: "It is known fathers with obesity or diabetes are more likely to have children who develop the same conditions, but the environmental contribution to this has been unclear."
She went on to say that increasing evidence indicates an important biological role of fathers in obesity in the programming of their offspring.
Recently, a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine claimed that pairing diabetics together to control their blood sugar levels is an effective way of managing the condition.
