Register as an Dietitian
Monday 18th October 2010
Those working in or seeking a dietician job have been divided in opinion, after researchers claimed that dark chocolate may help diabetics control dangerously high cholesterol levels.
According to the BBC, a Hull University study found that cholesterol had fallen in a small number of diabetes patients given chocolate bars rich in polyphenols - linked by earlier research to reduced risk of heart disease.
Professor Steve Atkin, who led the investigation, told the news provider that it could mean a reduction in heart risk for those with diabetes.
"Chocolate with a high cocoa content should be included in the diet of individuals with type-two diabetes as part of a sensible, balanced approach to diet and lifestyle," he argued.
However, Dr Iain Frame, director of research at Diabetes UK, did not agree with Professor Atkin's comments.
He suggested that the "tiny" health benefit of the compound found in high-cocoa chocolate bars would be "hugely outweighed" by such products' fat and sugar content.
