Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Friday 15th October 2010
Medical professionals seeking locum cardiology work or full-time employment in UK cardiac jobs have been alerted to the danger of insufficient beta blocker dosage in heart attack patients.
For almost 40 years, beta blockers have been known to increase patients' survival prospects following a heart attack, by decreasing the cardiac workload and oxygen demand on the cardiovascular system.
Jeffery Goldberger, a Northwestern Medicine cardiologist, has warned, however, that the majority of patients are frequently not receiving sufficiently large doses of the drugs, which could be jeopardising their chances of recovery.
"Only 46 per cent of patients studied were taking 50 per cent or more of the target dose of beta blockers shown to be beneficial in clinical trials," explained Mr Goldberger.
He added that the issue of patients not receiving adequate beta blocker amounts was a nationwide problem in the US, though medics in UK cardiac jobs also need to be alert to the issue.
Earlier this week, research from the University of Western Australia revealed that the daily consumption of two cups of tea could help cut a patient's risk of developing heart disease.
