People looking for UK medical jobs have been told that more lives could be saved if extra intensive care beds were available to use.
Peter Gibb, secretary of ICUsteps, said that this would reduce the need for patients to be discharged from intensive care before they are ready to leave, simply because someone else needs to be admitted who is more severely ill than they are.
"With intensive care patients, as soon as you are no longer regarded as being critical you can be discharged to anywhere in the hospital, and when you get there no one knows what you have been through or what the rehabilitation path is for you. One of the things that would be helpful is to have specific ICU recovery wards," he added.
Mr Gibb went on to say that most people in intensive care have more than one thing wrong with them, and it is wrong to then discharge them onto a ward where they only focus on one thing.
His words came after the Lancet medical journal published a report which stated that the burden of critical illness is higher than generally appreciated.
