Refer an Audiologist
Wednesday 6th October 2010
People with hearing loss are not receiving an adequate level of service from shops providing assessments and selling hearing aids on the high street, according to new research.
The RNID, Britain's largest hearing loss charity, joined forces with consumer watchdog Which? to send undercover researchers into 28 branches of the UK's five biggest independent dispensers.
In a report following the investigation, it described the mystery shoppers' experiences as "shocking" and is now calling for a review of regulations covering private hearing aid sellers.
"When you're being assessed for a hearing aid, it's vital that you are asked the right questions otherwise you risk receiving bad advice and the wrong prescription," said the RNID's chief executive Jackie Ballard.
Four in ten hearing assessments experienced by researchers were rated "poor" by audiology and trading standards experts, highlighting the need for trained healthcare professionals in audiology jobs.
Meanwhile, recent research by HearingDirect.com revealed that those hard of hearing often feel upset that their spouse is unable to empathise in terms of how their condition affects daily life.
