Biomedical science jobs 'boosted by Nestle investment'

A new healthcare nutrition unit is set to be developed by global food giant Nestle, which could see the creation of new biomedical science jobs in the UK and around the world.
Bridging the gaps between food production, pharmaceutical and biomedical science, the new unit will be commissioned by Nestle Health Science and its Institute of Health Sciences.
Nestle's existing Healthcare Nutrition business will be absorbed by the new division, with major investment – expected to run into the millions – planned for its biomedical health sciences research institute in Lausanne, Switzerland.
"The combination of health economics, changing demographics and advances in health science show that our existing health care systems, which focus on treating sick people, are not sustainable and need redesigning," said chairman Peter Brabeck-Letmathe.
With further investment, the group aims to develop treatments for disorders including diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer's.
Last week, research from the US Department of Agriculture revealed that eating blueberries may help patients combat atherosclerosis, otherwise known as hardening of the arteries.
