Audiologists told 'Deafness can lead to divorce'

New research has found that deafness can lead to heated arguments between couples, sometimes even leading to the breakdown of marriages, which may interest those looking for audiology jobs.
According to a survey by HearingDirect.com, hard-of-hearing individuals often feel upset that their spouse is unable to empathise in terms of how the condition affects daily life.
One-third of respondents to the poll, which quizzed more than 1,000 patients with deafness, said that their inability to hear properly had caused major arguments with the family.
In addition, one in sixteen participants revealed that their partner had threatened to leave or divorce them unless they sought help.
Joan McKechnie, an audiologist with the firm, said: "It can be a real shock for many people in their middle age who begin to experience hearing loss, as they do not like the idea of wearing a hearing aid, which has a real stigma associated with 'disabled' and old people."
She added that approximately one in five of the nine million people thought to suffer from some form of deafness keep their condition a secret.
