Every pregnant woman in Britain will be offered the seasonal flu jab for the first time, under new plans announced this week by the government, which may interest those searching for UK medical jobs.
According to the BBC, the decision was made as the swine flu virus, which poses a greater threat to expectant mothers than other patients, is likely to still be circulating.
In addition to pregnant women, the vaccine will be offered to its normal target groups – the over 65s, people with conditions such as diabetes and those in UK medical jobs.
The General Medical Council has urged doctors to be up-front about why the treatment is being offered.
"This would include telling a patient this year's seasonal flu jab contains the swine flu strain if they think the patient may have concerns about it," assistant director of standards, Jane O'Brien, told the news provider.
A total of 14 million patients, of which 500,000 are expected to be expectant mothers, will receive the injection.
