New research has suggested that blueberries may help combat atherosclerosis, otherwise known as hardening of the arteries, which may interest those seeking UK cardiac jobs.
Findings from a US Department of Agriculture (USDA) study with laboratory mice have shown that blueberries can play a role in preventing harmful lesions, symptomatic of atherosclerosis, from expanding in arteries.
The condition is reportedly the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes in the US, while such cardiovascular diseases are responsible for more deaths in the country than any other illness.
"Earlier studies, conducted elsewhere, have suggested that eating blueberries may help combat cardiovascular disease. But direct evidence of that effect has never been presented previously," explained principal investigator Xianli Wu.
In follow-up studies, the USDA's Arkansas Children's Nutrition Center plans to examine whether eating blueberries during infancy could protect patients against onset and progression of atherosclerosis in adulthood.
Meanwhile, a man from Leicester this week became the UK's first heart patient to receive a groundbreaking type of biodegradable stent to treat his condition.
