Locum doctor meetings 'to address south west's healthcare issues'

A south-west health body has reportedly defended its decision to allow the locum doctor population of Weston to hold monthly meetings to discuss issues arising in the area's healthcare provision.

According to the Weston Mercury, the afternoon gatherings for all GPs and those in locum doctor positions will provide a chance for health professionals to network with others in the area, but reduce the amount of time spent with patients.

In response to criticism from some local groups, NHS North Somerset told the news provider that the catch-up sessions would be "useful" and that urgent care would not be disrupted.

"Each meeting lasts an afternoon and comprehensive cover is provided for all patients during that time. Anyone needing urgent care is able to access a locum GP either in person or by telephone," a spokesperson explained.

With cover required for all GPs in the region during the monthly sessions, there could be an increase in locum doctor opportunities in the area.

Meanwhile, a £31 million investment in healthcare building projects are expected to save the Welsh NHS more than £12 million annually, with officials suggesting that hospital doctor jobs could be created.
