Operation department practitioners 'training with iPhones'

Medical trainees in Yorkshire, which could include aspiring operation department practitioners, are reportedly swapping textbooks for hi-tech smartphones to give them access to information at the touch of a screen.
According to the Yorkshire Post, more than 500 medical students at Leeds University will be given an Apple iPhone – on a loan basis – pre-loaded with technical reference material only usually available in heavy manuals.
With trainee operation department practitioners spending much of their time in hospitals and health centres, rather than in the lecture theatre, the scheme is designed to give students access to important information on the go.
Professor David Cottrell, from the medical school, told the newspaper that the initiative was part of a growing trend for mobile technology playing a key role in the teaching and practicing of modern medicine.
"By equipping our students with smartphones, we are putting a whole suite of training tools and educational resources in the palm of their hand," he added.
