Pharmacy jobs 'about more than dishing out medication'

Pharmacy jobs involve a great deal more than just distributing prescribed medicines, according to pharmacists in Gloucestershire, who are currently urging local people to acknowledge and use their expertise.
Teresa Middleton, who qualified as a pharmacist more than 30 years ago and now works as head of medicines for NHS Gloucestershire, told The Citizen that the skills of those in pharmacy jobs are not always fully appreciated.
"We need to utilise their skills. They train for five years and are able to do more than just stick labels on boxes. Pharmacists can often give helpful tips and pointers on how best to make your medicine work for you," she explained.
There are more than 100 pharmacies across Gloucestershire, with each being staffed by at least one trained pharmacist.
Ms Middleton added that people with minor ailments should consider visiting their local pharmacy for advice, before making an appointment with their GP.
Last week, health secretary Andrew Lansley officially opened Estuary View Medical Centre in Whitstable, which could soon be creating a number of pharmacy jobs in the area.
