Register as an Dietitian
Wednesday 22nd September 2010
A virus which causes respiratory infections has been linked to childhood obesity, which may interest those seeking a locum dietician job in the UK.
While similar evidence from previous research has been widely disputed, the latest study, published in Pediatrics, has shown that children with antibodies specific to the AD36 virus typically weighed 15.8kg more than those without.
Jeffrey Schwimmer, who led the research at the University of California school of medicine, said that he hoped the findings would change public attitudes towards obese people.
"Many people believe that obesity is one's own fault or the fault of one's parents or family. This work helps point out that body weight is more complicated than it's made out to be," he explained.
Previous studies have shown that chicken and mice injected with similar types of viruses displayed statistically significant weight gain.
Meanwhile, research from Diabetes UK has revealed that there are 11,000 people in Cumbria living with undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes, suggesting that locum dieticians in the area need to improve screening of those most at risk.
