Cuts to the government's public spending budget will have a detrimental effect on the number of UK medical jobs available in the country, it has been warned.
The Academy of Medical Sciences believes that the nation's current competitive advantage in research is under threat from a reduction in the amount of money being pumped into the sector.
According to the organisation, public spending is vital for medical sciences to be supported as relying on industry and charity money alone will not be sufficient to retain current standards.
Professor Sir John Bell, president of the Academy, said: "A long-term commitment to publicly funded research is vital if we are to harness the competitive advantage previous investment has generated."
The Academy supports better health care for Britain by assisting those in UK medical jobs whose research contributes to the development of treatments, cures and methods of preventing a wide variety of illnesses.
