Scientists funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC) are more influential than the global average, it has been revealed.
The council has said those it backs have twice as much influence in scientific terms, which could be of interest to people looking for UK medical jobs.
According to an analysis of citations carried out by the MRC, the mention of papers arising from work it funded was 2.35 times the world average.
This suggests that those in biomedical science jobs and other disciplines use and build on the work of MRC-funded scientists.
“Excellence with impact is central to all research funded and this is reflected in the excellence of the UK research environment,” the MRC commented.
The impact of UK research papers is second only to the USA and 13 per cent of MRC papers are cited more than four times the world average.
A publicly-funded organisation, the MRC aims to improve human health by supporting study in universities and hospitals, as well as its own centres.
