Hospital doctor jobs holders say trainees have little time to learn skills

Senior surgeons with hospital doctor jobs have explained in a letter that junior practitioners risk being left without enough time to train and develop specialist skills, bringing a "shift mentality" to the market.
Writing to the Daily Telegraph, president of the Royal College of Surgeons John Black and other leaders in the field noted that little analysis of the effects of the European Working Time Directive (EWTD) - which restricts professionals to keeping 48-hour weeks - has been carried out.
"Flexibility in training requirements is necessary to produce appropriately trained and skilled surgeons worthy of our patients," it was observed, with the missive going on to state it would be interesting to see what effects the EWTD would have on the performances of individuals such as Lance Armstrong and Roger Federer.
This comes after the BBC reported on Medical Programme Board statistics revealing that 23 per cent of trainees are abandoning their courses after two years, which the British Medical Association has linked to high workloads as a result of the restricted week.
