Locum pharmacists to provide free health checks

Free health checks for those aged between 40 and 74 are to be offered by locum pharmacists in six London-based locations as part of an NHS scheme launched today (September 8th).
Those opting for the 20-minute assessment will be questioned about family history, lifestyle and any current medication, while having their height, weight, blood pressure and cholesterol and glucose levels monitored, the Fulham and Hammersmith Chronicle reports.
The project has been designed to ascertain whether people are at risk of developing health problems such as diabetes, heart and kidney disease and stroke.
Such a move could prove invaluable as national charity Diabetes UK has just revealed that thousands of people in the UK are unaware they have type two diabetes, which increases their chances of complications such as kidney failure, blindness and heart disease.
Dr David McCoy, NHS Hammersmith and Fulham's acting director of public health, said: "People who are overweight, smoke, have high blood pressure or cholesterol and take little exercise are at greatest risk of developing the diseases health checks can diagnose."
