Juniors 'dropping out' of hospital doctor jobs

Research has revealed that junior medical professionals are dropping out of hospital doctor jobs after two years of training, a fact that has been linked to high workloads for staff.
According to the Medical Programme Board - which provides the industry with leadership and makes recommendations to ministers regarding the Modernising Medical Careers scheme - 23 per cent of the 6,000 people questioned abandoned their studies, the BBC reports.
And the British Medical Association (BMA) has put this down to shifts becoming more demanding as a result of the working time directive restricting the week to 48 hours.
However, not all those involved necessarily leave the profession altogether, with some choosing to go on a gap year and others still working within the NHS but in roles that do not apply to their previous training.
Dr Shree Datta, chairman of the BMA's junior doctors committee, observed: "Understaffing makes our work much more intense and does not go unnoticed by our patients."
