Cumbria's locum dieticians 'must watch out for diabetes'

Research has revealed that there are around 11,000 people in Cumbria living with undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes, suggesting that locum dieticians and others in primary care trusts need to improve screening of those considered to be most at risk.
This is according to Diabetes UK, with the 10,900 individuals concerned increasing their chances of developing kidney failure, blindness and heart disease, or having a stroke, local paper the News & Star reports.
"We … urgently need more initiatives in the north-west such as the Diabetes UK Measure Up campaign to raise awareness of the risk factors and symptoms," regional manager Julie Byron observed.
However, a spokesperson from NHS Cumbria noted that a scheme - Walking away from Diabetes - is currently being piloted to help prevent people from developing the disease.
In addition, Diabetes UK has just pledged its continued support to the National Prevention Research Initiative, a programme that funds studies to improve health and prevent illnesses such as diabetes, dementia and strokes.
