Locum pharmacists 'save healthcare systems £460m'

Research has revealed that locum pharmacists are saving healthcare systems in Finland hundreds of millions of pounds by offering advice that enables people to avoid visiting GPs and going to hospital.
Conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the Association of Finnish Pharmacies (AFP), the survey of 197 people holding pharmacy jobs in Finland showed 6.2 million doctor's trips and 750,000 visits to the emergency room were prevented.
Such moves have helped the industry save £460 million and, speaking at the International Pharmaceutical Federation conference this week, Dr Erkki Kostiainen of the AFP was quoted by Chemist+Druggist as saying: "Although some of the evaluations are based on the opinions and experience of doctors and pharmacists, I see no reason why these findings should not be applicable to other countries."
This comes after the chronic medication service was launched in Scotland by health secretary Nicola Sturgeon, expanding the roles of those with pharmacy jobs in the country.
