Pharmacy jobs holders given new role in patient treatment

People with pharmacy jobs in Scotland are to see their roles regarding patient care expanded as part of a new scheme that, according to the Scottish government, is the first of its kind in the UK.
Launched by health secretary Nicola Sturgeon, the initiative will see locum pharmacists and others in the profession given greater access to patient records - shared with GPs - and the capability of dispensing prescriptions that last up to 48 weeks.
The chronic medication service will also allow patients to collect medicine from pharmacies every few weeks without first having to see a doctor.
Ms Sturgeon remarked: "[The programme] will transform the role of pharmacists, making better use of their skills and expertise as they work alongside GPs."
Her comments come after Irish pharmacists called for the morning-after pill to be made more available for women in the UK, with some believing it should be accessible over the counter without a doctor's note.
