Locum dieticians 'to recommend banana plantain for Crohn's sufferers'

The use of banana plantain fibres to treat people with Crohn's disease could soon be recommended by locum dieticians as research has revealed that it may keep patients in remission.
Conducted by scientists at the University of Liverpool, the study found that dietary agents could impact on E.coli entering the gut's lining and prevent chronic inflammation, with plantain restricting the transport and uptake of intestinal bacteria across M-cells.
Now, the college is working with Provexis, a biotechnology company, to test a plantain-based product that could be used as a therapy.
"Dietary factors and the increased numbers of E.coli in the intestine of Crohn’s patients suggested to us that there could be a link between the food that we eat and the transportation of bacteria," said Jon Rhodes, professor at the university and member of the National Institute for Health Research Biomedical Research Centre.
According to the NHS, the condition is a rare one, affecting seven out of 100,000 people each year in the UK, generally first manifesting itself in those aged between 16 and 30, although it can be seen in all age groups.
