There are too many women being diagnosed late with ovarian cancer, making the disease much more difficult to treat, it has been said.
According to Peter Reynolds, chief executive officer at Ovarian Cancer Action, too many women are only diagnosed as suffering from the condition when it has already spread beyond the ovary. This makes the illness more difficult to tackle, he said, and is part of the reason for the low survival rates being seen with the condition over the past few years.
He said that when the survival rate for ovarian cancer is compared to that of breast cancer, "it's clear" that there needs to be improvements made to the way in which ovarian cancer sufferers are treated.
His comments followed findings from scientists who have discovered that a protein could help improve responses to chemotherapy among those suffering from ovarian cancer.
According to new research, Salt Inducible Kinase 2 can help regulate cell division in the body.
