Doctors urge standard prescription systems

A group of people in medical jobs are calling for a standard prescription system to be put in place, it has been reported.
The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh found that in one week, ten per cent of those in training to be a doctor and six per cent of those in consultant jobs made a mistake when prescribing medicines to patients.
This highlights a need for a new, standardised, system to be put in place to ensure the safety of patients, doctors have said.
The group now wants a system similar to the one used in Wales, which uses a national prescribing chart.
Should patients be given the wrong dose or the incorrect medicine all together, they could be at risk of reactions to other drugs, it was warned.
President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh Dr Neil Dewhurst said: "Putting it simply, patients should expect a standardised system of prescribing regardless of which hospital in Scotland they are treated."
