Pharmacists to hear wasted medication study results

Individuals with pharmacy jobs who are attending the annual Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain conference in September will hear the full results of a new study on wasted prescription medication.
According to the BBC, new research carried out by the Health and Social Services Department has indicated that nearly £200,000 of prescription drugs was wasted in Alderney and Guernsey alone,
This is a rise on 2009's figures, which estimated the cost of unused medicines in the Balliwick to be £186,000. Estimates for the entire UK suggest that the NHS may lose up to £100 million a year due to wasted prescription medication.
It is thought that the main reasons for the waste include repeat prescriptions that are not necessary, as well as patients not finishing a full course of treatment.
Last month, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain announced a list of new principles to help shape supervision models for community pharmacists.
These include ensuring respect for the pharmacy protection, as well as adapting different supervision models for unique areas - although adequate staffing levels must always be maintained.
