Proposals for single-sex wards welcomed

The government's plans to eliminate mixed-sex wards in hospitals around the UK have been welcomed by one organisation.
Deputy chief executive of Counsel and Care Caroline Bernard explained that the move away from mixed accommodation helps "preserve the dignity" of many patients - comments which could be of interest to people working in hospital doctor jobs.
She noted that older and vulnerable people are "disproportionately affected" by being treated on mixed wards.
"It is clearly important that, to preserve dignity, men and women should be cared for on separate wards as far as possible, unless they have specific needs such as intensive care," Ms Bernard stated.
Research released by the Department of Health earlier this month revealed that tens of thousands of patients are placed on mixed-sex wards each year "without clinical justification".
As a result, the coalition government has pledged to eliminate the use of mixed accommodation in hospitals.
