'More funding needed' for dementia research

An increased level of funding needs to be made available to allow biomedical researchers to learn more about dementia and potentially develop new treatments, it has been stated.
Dr Simon Ridley, head of research at Alzheimer's Research Trust, highlighted the scale of the problem with the disease.
"Dementia has been called the greatest medical challenge of our age because we have a growing population, are living longer, but we are not necessarily living healthily for longer," he stated.
People looking for biomedical science jobs may be interested to know that the trust has been campaigning with the government to try and raise funds for dementia research.
A report published earlier this year by the organisation revealed that 820,000 people in the UK are affected by the condition, at a cost to the economy of £23 billion per year.
Dr Ridley noted that, compared with other major diseases such as cancer, dementia research has been underfunded for a long time.
