New campaign for Hep B and C tests in pharmacies

Those working in pharmacy jobs may soon be part of a new screening and vaccination service for hepatitis B and C, thanks to a new campaign.
A media drive undertaken by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the Hepatitis C Trust was launched today (August 18th).
The campaign is designed to encourage primary care trusts to implement a new screening programme to test for the conditions, which would be run by local pharmacists.
Some £70,000 in funding has been allocated to the Hepatitis C Trust by the Department of Health to train those in pharmacy jobs to carry out the new service.
It is thought that in total, the costs to a community pharmacy of running the service would be £2,200.
According to the organisation, a pilot project of the scheme in 19 pharmacies across the UK has found one patient testing positive for hepatitis B or C out of every six conducted.
These findings were made during a three-month pilot project, during which a total of 234 tests were carried out.
