Dark chocolate 'could help improve heart health'

Dark chocolate 'could help improve heart health'

Wednesday 18th August 2010

Middle-aged women and older who eat a moderate amount of chocolate may benefit from a lower risk of heart failure when compared with their non-chocolate-eating counterparts.

This is according to a study carried out in Sweden and reported in Circulation: Heart Failure - one of the journals published by the American Heart Association.

However, the study's lead research, Murray Mittleman, commented that women who eat chocolate every day are not likely to benefit from the protective effect of the sweet treat.

Indeed, women who ate an average of one to two servings of dark chocolate a month were found to have a 32 per cent lower risk of heart failure, while those who ate between one and three servings a month had a reduced risk rate of 26 per cent.

However, those who ate at least one serving a day showed no protective benefits.

Nutrition is an important consideration for heart patients and those working in UK cardiac jobs should also be aware of other risk factors that go along with the condition.

One study, published in the British Medical Journal earlier this month, indicated that the temperature outdoors can also be linked to heart attacks.

Research carried out by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine indicated that for every degree the temperature drops, the risk of heart attack increases a cumulative two per cent for 28 days.
