More hospital doctors needed in Scotland

Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments in Scotland are being put under increasing pressure by a rise in the number of patients and staff shortages.
Research carried out by Audit Scotland revealed that A&E departments in the country had to deal with 1.4 million patients during 2008-09, which represented a nine per cent increase over the past decade.
Auditor general for Scotland Robert Black revealed that patients are broadly happy with the care they receive at A&E, but noted that there are problems that need to be addressed.
"Emerging staffing issues, such as shortages of junior doctors and the impact of the European working hours legislation, must be tackled at a national level, not just locally," he stated.
Earlier this month the Royal College of Surgeons called for a review of working hours within UK medical jobs after a survey found that 80 per cent of consultant surgeons believed patient care had deteriorated under the new rules.
