Survival rates for breast cancer in the UK have improved, according to new European research.
The British Medical Journal published the study, which examined breast cancer mortality rates in women living in 30 European countries.
England and Wales saw death rates for the disease fall by 35 per cent between 1989 and 2006.
Meanwhile Scotland and Northern Ireland saw their mortality rates for the illness drop by 30 per cent and 29 per cent respectively.
The biomedical researchers who were responsible for analysing the data also discovered that women under the age of 50 experienced the biggest reduction in mortality.
Hilary Tovey, policy manager at Cancer Research UK, explained that many different things have contributed to the fall in deaths as a result of breast cancer.
"Reorganising breast cancer services, screening, improved awareness and better treatments made possible as a result of excellent research, have all had a role to play," she stated.
