Cold weather 'causes more heart attacks'

A new study has revealed that cold weather is associated with higher incidences of heart attack.
The research, which was carried out by scientists at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, may be of interest to people working in UK cardiac jobs.
According to the report, which has been published in the British Medical Journal, every temperature drop of one degree C during a single day is associated with approximately 200 additional heart attacks in the UK.
The scientists also found that the risk is greatest approximately two weeks after exposure to a lower ambient temperature.
Lead author Krishnan Bhaskaran explained that some groups of people are more at risk than others.
"Older people between the ages of 75 and 84 and those with previous coronary heart disease seemed to be more vulnerable to the effects of temperature reductions," he stated.
Mr Bhaskaran went on to point out that even during summer, drops in temperature could also be responsible for causing more heart attacks.
According to the British Heart Foundation, heart and circulatory disease account for one in three deaths in the UK, which equates to approximately 200,000 deaths every year.
