Scottish urban pharmacies see greater uptake of MAS

The number of patients making use of the Minor Ailments Scheme (MAS) is higher in urban pharmacies and the most deprived areas of Scotland, research has shown.
People working in pharmacy jobs may find the study of interest, as it revealed that community pharmacies located in urban areas in Scotland registered more patients per month than those based in rural settings, Pharmaceutical Journal Online reported.
The full report was published in Health Policy earlier this month, the publication noted.
It also found that the uptake of MAS services was higher in areas where there is a greater proportion of patients under the age of 16.
Among the most commonly-dispensed items under the scheme were paracetamol, ibuprofen and citric acid - otherwise known as simple linctus.
There are more than 1,200 community pharmacies in Scotland, which are represented by Community Pharmacy Scotland.
In addition to liaising with government, the organisation also provides information and advice to those running community pharmacies in the country.
